Professional. Mobile. Trusted.
The NOx sensor is the single most commonly replaced part in an SCR system — and one of the most commonly replaced unnecessarily. Because the fault code names the circuit rather than the culprit, plenty of vehicles get a new sensor fitted when the real problem was a corroded connector, a chafed loom, an exhaust leak upstream, or an SCR catalyst that had genuinely degraded. We attend with dealer-grade equipment, read upstream and downstream live values against each other through a real drive cycle, test the heater circuit, supply and earth, and only then tell you what needs replacing.
- Upstream and downstream NOx sensor testing with live comparative data
- P2200, P2201, P229F, P20EE, P2BAD and manufacturer-specific codes
- Heater-circuit, supply, earth and connector testing before condemning a sensor
- AdBlue warning and no-restart countdown investigated at source
- Repeat-failure investigation — why the last sensor died
- Mercedes, Ford, VW, Audi, BMW, Peugeot, Citroen, Vauxhall, Land Rover, Nissan
- Mobile diagnostic visit from £150 — parts and repair quoted separately once diagnosed
- No sensor bypasses or emulators on road-going vehicles
When a NOx sensor is actually the problem
Six presentations we see weekly. Only some of them end with a new sensor.
Engine management light with a NOx-related code
P2200, P2201, P229F, P20EE, P2BAD and the manufacturer equivalents all point at the NOx measuring chain. The code names the circuit, not the culprit — the same code appears for a failed sensor, a wiring fault and a genuinely poor-performing SCR catalyst.
AdBlue warning or no-restart countdown
On SCR vehicles the NOx sensors are how the ECU decides whether AdBlue dosing is working. A sensor reading out of range is one of the most common reasons an AdBlue warning appears on a car with a full tank.
Limp mode or reduced power
Some platforms cut power instead of blocking a restart. If the derate follows a cold start or appears after a motorway run, live NOx data during that drive cycle usually shows why.
Failed or borderline MOT emissions
A degraded upstream sensor can let dosing drift long before the dash says anything. Worth checking before a retest rather than after.
Heater circuit faults
NOx sensors run a heater to reach operating temperature. Heater-circuit codes are frequently a supply, earth or connector problem rather than the sensor itself — and that is a very different repair.
Repeat sensor failures
A second sensor failing quickly usually means something else is killing it: exhaust leaks, chafed loom, water ingress at the connector, or an underlying SCR/DPF condition. Replacing the part again without finding that is money thrown away.
How we test a NOx sensor
- Full system scan — stored, pending and permanent codes across engine, SCR and gateway modules.
- Freeze-frame review: what the engine was doing when the fault set.
- Live upstream and downstream NOx values compared through warm-up and a loaded drive cycle. A sensor that looks fine at idle often does not once the catalyst is up to temperature.
- Heater-circuit operation, supply voltage, earth quality and connector condition.
- Dosing data cross-check — AdBlue quantity, pressure and tank level, so the SCR side is ruled in or out.
- Exhaust-leak and loom inspection around both sensor positions.
- Plain-English finding, then a fixed parts-and-labour quote before anything is ordered.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a NOx sensor do?+
It measures oxides of nitrogen in the exhaust. Modern diesels carry an upstream sensor before the SCR catalyst and a downstream sensor after it. The ECU compares the two readings to decide how much AdBlue to dose and whether the SCR system is actually working. If either sensor reads implausibly, the ECU logs a fault and eventually starts an AdBlue warning or no-restart countdown.
How do I know if my NOx sensor is faulty?+
You usually do not from the driver's seat — the symptoms (warning light, AdBlue message, limp mode) are identical to several other faults. Diagnosis means reading upstream and downstream live values against each other during a proper drive cycle, checking heater-circuit operation, and testing the supply and earth at the connector. That is the only way to separate a failed sensor from wiring, an exhaust leak or an SCR catalyst that has genuinely degraded.
How much does NOx sensor diagnosis and replacement cost?+
Our mobile diagnostic visit starts at the £150 minimum service charge. That covers the full diagnosis — fault codes, live NOx data, heater and circuit testing — and you get a written finding at the end. Parts and any repair labour are quoted separately once we know what has actually failed; NOx sensors vary enormously in price between manufacturers, so we quote against your registration rather than guessing. Nothing is ordered or fitted before you approve the price.
Can you just clear the code or reset it?+
We will not. Clearing the code without fixing the cause means the fault returns within a drive cycle or two, usually further along the countdown than before. If a customer only wants the light cleared, we would rather decline the job.
Do I need one sensor or both?+
Usually only the failed one. Fitting both as a matter of course is a common upsell we do not do — the live data shows which one is out of range, and often neither is at fault and the problem is in the loom or the dosing side.
Can you fit a bypass or emulator instead?+
No. We do not fit sensor bypasses or emulators to road-going vehicles. The fix is a correct diagnosis followed by a correct repair, which keeps the vehicle road-legal and MOT-compliant.
Do you come to me?+
Yes — fully mobile across Staines, Heathrow, Slough, Windsor, Hounslow, West London, Uxbridge, Woking, Bracknell, Maidenhead and Reading. Home, workplace or yard.
