Car Warning Lights & Common Engine Problems Explained (London Drivers Guide)

Modern vehicles are controlled by multiple computers and sensors.
When a warning light appears on the dashboard, the car is not simply “complaining” — it is reporting that one of its systems is operating outside safe limits.

Many drivers continue to drive because the car still moves normally. Unfortunately, small faults often develop into expensive repairs if ignored. A warning light does not always mean the car will immediately break down, but it does mean the vehicle has detected abnormal readings.

The purpose of this guide is to help drivers understand what their car is trying to tell them, what symptoms are serious, and when a proper diagnostic check is required.

Engine Management Light (Check Engine Light)

The engine management light (also called EML or check engine light) is the most common dashboard warning.
It means the engine control unit (ECU) has detected incorrect data from a sensor or system.

The light can appear for many reasons including:

  • airflow sensor problems

  • fuel pressure issues

  • turbo boost problems

  • EGR faults

  • emissions system errors

If the light is steady, the car may still be safe to drive for a short period, but performance or fuel economy may be reduced.

If the light is flashing, you should stop driving as soon as possible. A flashing light usually indicates active misfiring which can damage the catalytic converter or DPF filter.

A diagnostic scan is required to determine the exact cause because the warning light itself does not identify the faulty component.

Limp Mode (Car Has No Power)

Limp mode is a protection strategy used by the ECU to prevent engine damage.

Drivers usually notice:

  • the car won’t rev past 2500–3000 RPM

  • turbo stops working

  • very slow acceleration

  • gearbox stuck in one gear

The car intentionally limits power to protect internal components.

Common causes include:

  • boost pressure leaks

  • turbo actuator faults

  • blocked DPF filter

  • faulty EGR valve

  • incorrect fuel pressure

  • sensor failure

Limp mode does not fix itself. Even if the car temporarily returns to normal, the fault is still stored and usually returns.

DPF Blocked / Regeneration Problems

Diesel vehicles use a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to trap soot particles from the exhaust.

The filter normally cleans itself through a process called regeneration.
However, frequent short journeys and city driving prevent regeneration from completing.

Typical symptoms:

  • loss of power

  • high fuel consumption

  • cooling fan running after engine off

  • strong hot smell

  • warning light on dashboard

  • rising engine oil level

Continuing to drive with a blocked DPF can damage the turbocharger and engine.

A proper diagnostic check is necessary to confirm soot levels and regeneration status.

AdBlue Warning / “No Start in 500 Miles”

Many modern diesel cars use an SCR system with AdBlue fluid to reduce emissions.

When a fault occurs, the dashboard may display:
“No start in 500 miles” or similar countdown.

Important:
Refilling AdBlue does not always solve the problem.

The warning is usually caused by:

  • NOx sensor failure

  • AdBlue injector blockage

  • heater system fault

  • SCR control module error

Once the counter reaches zero, many vehicles will not start at all.

This situation requires diagnostic intervention before the car becomes immobilised.

Hard Starting (Long Cranking)

If the engine takes a long time to start, the issue is usually related to fuel pressure.

Possible causes:

  • fuel pressure regulator

  • rail pressure sensor

  • injector leak-back

  • glow plug control module

Hard starting should not be ignored because low fuel pressure can damage the high-pressure pump.
