Lost one key, spare still works
The cheaper route, and the one most people should take before the second key disappears. A fresh key cut and coded alongside your existing one, usually in a single short visit.
Spare / second car key
Planned work rather than an emergency. Sensible on any car with a single key — a spare costs considerably less than an all-keys-lost job later.
Key snapped, worn or broken
Snapped blade in the door or ignition, worn blade that no longer turns, or a fob that has physically come apart. Extraction and a freshly cut replacement blade coded to the same transponder where the electronics are intact.

Key cutting shop or auto locksmith — which do you need?
A high-street key cutting counter copies the metal blade. That is enough for a house key, and it is enough for a very old car with no electronics. Every car built with an immobiliser — broadly everything from the late 1990s onwards — also needs the transponder chip or proximity key coded to that specific vehicle, which is diagnostic work rather than cutting work. If your car will unlock with a cut blade but will not start, that is the coding step missing. We do both parts in one mobile visit: the blade is cut to your vehicle's key code and the electronics are programmed to the immobiliser before we leave.
How a mobile car key replacement works
- Send your registration, postcode and what has happened by phone or WhatsApp. The registration tells us the key type, the security platform and whether the job is doable mobile.
- You get a fixed price for the key, the programming and the visit before anyone is dispatched.
- We attend, verify your V5C and photo ID, and read the vehicle's key code from the ECU, immobiliser or lock as the platform requires.

How much is a car key replacement?+
Guide prices: spare car keys from £150, lost car keys (no working key remaining) from £180, key programming only from £150. Our minimum mobile service charge is £150 and parts are additional. Smart, proximity and prestige keys are quoted individually against your registration — you get a fixed price before we attend.
Can you replace a car key when all keys are lost?+
Yes. Losing every key is the job we attend most. We read the vehicle's key code, cut a new blade or emergency key, and program a new transponder or proximity key to the immobiliser on your driveway. Some later systems are dealer-locked — Mercedes FBS4 (broadly 2015 onwards) is one of them, and we will tell you that up front rather than attend and fail.
Do I have to get a replacement key from the main dealer?+
No. An auto locksmith with the correct equipment can supply and program the same key without recovering the vehicle to a dealership. The dealer route is only unavoidable on a small number of dealer-locked platforms, which we identify from your registration before booking.
What do you need from me?+
Your registration, your postcode, and proof you are entitled to the vehicle — V5C (or an equivalent ownership document) plus photo ID. No exceptions. It is what separates a legitimate auto locksmith from someone who should not be cutting keys at all.
