A spare car key is the smallest insurance policy you will ever buy and the one most likely to save you a four-figure bill. The maths is brutal: a planned spare key cut and coded on your driveway costs from £150 and takes under an hour. An emergency lost-key replacement on the same car — typically called in from a supermarket car park, a beach or an airport at 8pm on a Sunday — costs from £180, climbs to £400+ for premium German smart keys and creates a cascade of mini-cab fares, missed flights and rearranged meetings. The car's immobiliser system recognises that key over the OBD port, which lets us add a second transponder to its memory without re-flashing the immobiliser, without coding the BCM from scratch and without any of the security paperwork that an all-keys-lost job requires. That is why a spare key is significantly cheaper than a lost-key replacement — the security state of the car is already known.

From there the process is four steps. We confirm the key type (transponder, remote, flip key, smart key, proximity fob) and cut a precision-machined blank to match your existing blade on the in-van laser machine. We code a fresh transponder chip to your specific VIN over OBD or, on high-security cars, via EEPROM. We pair the remote buttons (lock, unlock, boot, panic alarm) to the central locking, and on keyless-go cars we register the new fob with the comfort access antennas. Finally we test every function — ignition, all doors, boot, remote range — before we leave.

Three options sit in front of you when you need a second key. Option one is the main dealer. Premium-brand dealers will sell you a coded spare smart key for £400–£700 plus a labour charge to fit, with the car going to the workshop for half a day. The key itself is genuinely OEM but the price reflects the dealer's overhead, not the cost of the part. Option two is buying a fob from eBay or Amazon and finding 'someone local' to code it. The fob may or may not be a working blank — half of the cheap Chinese fobs sold online are unprogrammable rejects sold for scrap. Even when the fob is genuine, a back-bedroom locksmith without dealer-level tools often cannot pair it to modern smart-key cars and you end up paying twice.
