Professional. Mobile. Trusted.
The electronic parking brake replaced the old handbrake lever on almost every car built since 2010. Each rear caliper has a small motor that screws the piston outwards to clamp the pad onto the disc. Two problems come with that motor: first, you can't change the rear pads without electronically winding the piston back into the caliper (a wind-back tool doesn't fit), and second, the motor or its control module can throw a fault that locks the brake on and leaves the car immobile. Both jobs need a scan tool that knows how to talk to the EPB module — VAG ODIS, BMW INPA, Mercedes XENTRY, JLR SDD, Ford IDS, GM MDI, Toyota Techstream — to enter Service Mode, retract the motors, change the pads, and then re-arm the system with a position-learn. We do all of this on the driveway in 30–90 minutes.

Warning Lights & Symptoms We See Most.
These are the symptoms our customers describe when they book electronic parking brake (epb) reset. If yours matches one of these, we can usually clear the fault and code/calibrate the affected module on site — no garage drop-off, no waiting list.
Common Causes & What We Check.
Most electronic parking brake (epb) reset jobs trace back to one of a handful of root causes. We work through them in order, using a dealer-grade OEM-spec scan tool, a multimeter and a road-test — not a code-reader and a guess.
Most modern cars detect rear-pad wear through the EPB motor's current draw — when the piston has to wind out further than a threshold, the warning triggers. Replacing pads alone won't clear it; the motor must be retracted in service mode and the position learned again.
EPB control units lose their position memory on low voltage. The motor 'forgets' how far open the piston is and refuses to operate until a scan tool re-initialises the position-learn.
The plastic gearing inside the motor unit wears or strips, usually one side first. Symptom: one rear corner won't release; ABS pump runs continuously trying to compensate. We test motor current draw and quote a replacement motor (or full caliper if the motor is non-removable).
The standalone EPB ECU (under the rear seat on most VAG and BMW) can fail outright after water ingress. Coding a replacement is dealer-level work — we carry the kit for every UK platform.
A frequent mistake at independent garages: a generic OBD reader tries to open EPB service mode and fails halfway, leaving the motor mid-stroke. The brake is locked half-on. We finish the routine with the correct tool and recover from the locked state.
Some hybrid systems still use a mechanical cable behind the EPB motor. A seized cable or guide pin can prevent release even though the motor is fine. We diagnose with live current draw before condemning any electrical part.
Our On-Site Diagnostic Process.
Every electronic parking brake (epb) reset job follows the same six-step process. No skipping steps to save time, no upselling a part you don't need.
- 1Pre-scan & live data
Read all EPB, ABS, ESP and chassis DTCs. Watch live motor current draw and position values on left and right rear corners to identify which side is faulting.
- 2Service-mode entry
Command the EPB module to retract both rear pistons to the service position. This is the routine your garage refused to do — typically takes 60–90 seconds per side.
- 3Mechanical work (if you booked pad change)
Strip caliper, clean carriers, fit new OEM-spec pads, copper-grease backing plates, refit caliper to torque. We can supply pads or fit customer-supplied parts.
- 4Re-apply & position-learn
Command motors to close to new pad thickness, then run the EPB position-learn routine so the module re-references the open/closed limits.
- 5Auto-hold & hill-start re-init
On any modern car the EPB ties into auto-hold and hill-start assist. We run those adaptations together so all driver-assist functions return at handover.
- 6Road-test & verification
Short road test with a controlled hill-start, a moving EPB stop test (where supported) and a return to ensure the warning lights stay off and no DTCs return.

Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Reset — Questions
How much does an electronic parking brake reset cost?+
£49 fixed for the standalone EPB reset or service-mode routine. £89 to recover a stuck-on EPB. £199–£289 to also replace the rear pads with OEM-spec parts and re-learn the position. £189–£259 to replace a single EPB motor per side. All prices include the on-site visit, scan, coding and 12-month warranty.
Can I change rear pads myself on a car with EPB?+
Not without a scan tool. The EPB motor has to be commanded into Service Mode before the piston will retract — and then commanded out again with a position-learn after the new pads are in. A standard wind-back tool will not work and forcing it damages the motor.
Why is my parking brake stuck on?+
Most common cause: a half-completed code-clear or service-mode entry at a garage without the right tool, leaving the motor mid-stroke. Less common: failed motor, stripped internal gear, or a flat battery during operation. We recover all three on site for £89 fixed.
Will an OBD code reader release my EPB?+
No. Generic OBD readers can read EPB fault codes but cannot command service-mode entry or position-learn. The routine is OEM-specific and requires dealer-grade tooling — different per manufacturer.
Do I need to come to a workshop or can you do this on my driveway?+
100% on your driveway. Every job described on this page is done with the car parked on a flat surface at your address — no garage visit, no tow.
How long does the job take?+
Standalone reset 30–45 minutes. Pad change with reset 75–120 minutes depending on rear caliper design (sliding vs four-piston). Motor replacement 60–90 minutes per side. We give a fixed quote on WhatsApp before we attend.
What is auto-hold and will you re-enable it?+
Auto-hold keeps the EPB applied at traffic lights so you can lift your foot off the brake pedal. Any EPB work that involves a position-learn resets it. We re-enable auto-hold and hill-start assist as part of every job, no extra charge.
Will the warning light return after the reset?+
Only if there is an unfixed underlying fault — failing motor, dragging caliper, low brake fluid. We test motor current draw and pad thickness as part of the diagnostic so we don't reset a fault that's going to come straight back.
Why Drivers Choose StageMyCar For Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) Reset
Most electronic parking brake (epb) reset faults aren't a "swap the part and hope" job — they're a coding, calibration and adaptation problem. A high-street garage with a generic OBD reader can pull a fault code but often can't write the calibration data back to the module after a repair, which is why so many customers tell us the warning light came back the next morning. Our vans carry dealer-grade tooling for every UK-market platform, so the calibration that clears the light isn't a separate dealer trip — it's part of the same fixed-price visit.
We attend driveways, workplaces, supermarket car parks, airport long-stays and roadside breakdowns across London, the M25 corridor and the M3/M4/M40 commuter belt. Fixed price quoted on WhatsApp before we attend; cards, cash, bank transfer and Payment Assist (3–4 monthly instalments on jobs over £250) all accepted; 12-month warranty on every job.
