Professional. Mobile. Trusted.
The steering angle sensor (SAS) sits at the base of the steering column and tells the ABS, ESP, EPS and (on modern cars) the lane-keep assist module exactly where straight-ahead is. Any time the wheels are physically realigned, the suspension is disturbed, the airbag clock-spring is replaced or the battery is left disconnected for long enough to wipe the module's stored zero-point, the SAS reads a steering angle the chassis modules don't believe. The ESP light comes on; on most modern cars the EPS power-steering assist also degrades or the lane-keep system refuses to arm. The fix isn't a part — it's a 5-minute calibration routine that has to be commanded by a dealer-grade scan tool with the wheels held straight on level ground. We do it on the driveway.
- Fixed-price SAS calibration from £49 — no call-out fee
- Required after any wheel alignment or 4-wheel tracking
- Required after any suspension, subframe or steering-rack work
- Required after clock-spring or airbag squib replacement
- Required after most ABS / ESP module replacements
- Yaw-rate sensor & lateral-G adaptation done together
- Most jobs done in 15–30 minutes on the driveway
- 12-month warranty on the calibration
Warning Lights & Symptoms We See Most.
These are the symptoms our customers describe when they book steering angle sensor calibration. If yours matches one of these, we can usually clear the fault and code/calibrate the affected module on site — no garage drop-off, no waiting list.
Common Causes & What We Check.
Most steering angle sensor calibration jobs trace back to one of a handful of root causes. We work through them in order, using a dealer-grade OEM-spec scan tool, a multimeter and a road-test — not a code-reader and a guess.
Every reputable alignment shop should SAS-calibrate at the end of the job — but the budget chains rarely do because they don't carry the right tool. The chassis modules then see a non-zero angle when the wheels are straight and disable ESP. A 5-minute reset clears it permanently.
Any job that removes the subframe, the steering rack or the lower wishbones will move the relationship between the rack and the steering column. The SAS needs re-zeroing once everything is back together.
Some platforms (VAG, BMW, JLR) hold the SAS zero-point in volatile memory. A flat or disconnected battery overnight wipes it. The light comes on the moment the engine starts again.
On most modern cars the SAS is integrated into the clock-spring assembly. Fitting a new clock-spring means fitting a new SAS — and that new sensor needs calibrating to the chassis modules before ESP works again.
A new or refurbished ABS/ESP module has no learned values. Until SAS calibration is run together with the yaw-rate and lateral-G adaptation, the new module refuses to enable stability control.
Even a minor kerb-strike that bends the steering arm can throw the SAS reading out of tolerance. We measure the live angle with the wheels physically straight before deciding whether a calibration alone is enough or a re-alignment is needed first.
Our On-Site Diagnostic Process.
Every steering angle sensor calibration job follows the same six-step process. No skipping steps to save time, no upselling a part you don't need.
- 1Park on level ground & wheels straight
Calibration only runs with the car on a flat surface and the steering held visibly straight. We bring our own laser-line as a reference.
- 2Pre-calibration scan
Read all DTCs in the ABS, ESP, EPS, SAS and chassis modules. We look for related faults (yaw sensor, lateral-G, brake-pressure) that need addressing first.
- 3Confirm tyre pressures & ride height
Wildly mismatched tyre pressures or a sagging rear coil will skew the live angle reading. Quick check before calibrating.
- 4Run the SAS zero-point routine
Platform-specific routine — VAG Login 40168 then Basic Settings 060, BMW INPA SZL initialisation, Mercedes XENTRY SAS calibration, JLR SDD SAS reset, Ford IDS PSCM relearn, Toyota Techstream zero-point calibration.
- 5Yaw-rate & lateral-G adaptation
On many modern platforms the yaw-rate and lateral-G sensors share the same adaptation cycle. We run both together so the chassis modules agree on what 'stationary and straight' looks like.
- 6Road-test verification
Short road test — gentle left-right swerves and a controlled brake — to confirm the ESP light stays off and stability control intervenes correctly under hard cornering.

Steering Angle Sensor Calibration — Questions
How much does steering angle sensor calibration cost?+
£49 fixed for the standalone SAS reset. £79 for a full SAS + yaw-rate + lateral-G adaptation (recommended after suspension work). Both prices include the on-site visit, scan, calibration and road-test.
Why is my ESP light on after a wheel alignment?+
The SAS now reads a non-zero angle with the wheels straight. The ABS / ESP module sees that as a contradiction and disables stability control until the sensor is re-zeroed. Any alignment job should include this reset — many budget chains skip it.
Can I drive with the ESP light on?+
Mechanically yes, but stability control and traction control are disabled and on most modern cars the lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise and self-parking systems will also refuse to arm. We recommend a same-day reset — it's a 5-minute job.
Will an OBD code reader calibrate the steering angle sensor?+
No. Calibration is a dealer-level service routine, not a code clear. The scan tool has to send a specific command (different per manufacturer) with the wheels held straight on level ground. Generic readers cannot do this.
How long does the calibration take?+
15–30 minutes from arrival for a standalone reset, 30–45 minutes if yaw and lateral-G are also adapted. The routine itself runs in under a minute — most of the time is the pre-scan and road-test.
Do you need to drive the car at speed for the calibration?+
On a few platforms (Honda, Mazda, some Toyota smart-key variants) a short drive at 30+ mph is part of the routine. On most VAG, BMW, Mercedes and JLR cars it's a static calibration with the engine running and the wheels held straight.
Will SAS calibration fix my heavy steering / EPS warning?+
If the EPS light is on because of a missing SAS zero-point (very common after a battery disconnect), yes. If the EPS motor or torque sensor has failed, calibration will not help — we will diagnose first and quote honestly before any work.
Do you give a warranty on SAS calibration?+
Yes — 12 months on the calibration. If the same fault returns within 12 months we will re-run the routine free of charge (after ruling out a new physical fault such as a kerb strike).
Why Drivers Choose StageMyCar For Steering Angle Sensor Calibration
Most steering angle sensor calibration faults aren't a "swap the part and hope" job — they're a coding, calibration and adaptation problem. A high-street garage with a generic OBD reader can pull a fault code but often can't write the calibration data back to the module after a repair, which is why so many customers tell us the warning light came back the next morning. Our vans carry dealer-grade tooling for every UK-market platform, so the calibration that clears the light isn't a separate dealer trip — it's part of the same fixed-price visit.
We attend driveways, workplaces, supermarket car parks, airport long-stays and roadside breakdowns across London, the M25 corridor and the M3/M4/M40 commuter belt. Fixed price quoted on WhatsApp before we attend; cards, cash, bank transfer and Payment Assist (3–4 monthly instalments on jobs over £250) all accepted; 12-month warranty on every job.
