Common Causes & What We Check.

Most abs fault diagnosis jobs trace back to one of a handful of root causes. We work through them in order, using a dealer-grade OEM-spec scan tool, a multimeter and a road-test — not a code-reader and a guess.

Failed wheel-speed sensor (most common)

Front sensors fail more often than rears due to road salt and brake-dust corrosion. A single failed sensor disables the entire ABS, ESP and traction-control system. We read live wheel-speed data on the scan tool, identify the bad sensor in under 10 minutes and fit a new one on site.

Damaged reluctor ring (tone ring)

The magnetic ring on the hub/driveshaft can crack or shed teeth, giving the sensor a missing or corrupted signal. Common on Ford Focus Mk2/3, Vauxhall Astra J, BMW 1-series and Mini R56. Often misdiagnosed as a sensor fault.

Corroded sensor wiring or connector

The pigtail loom from the sensor to the body harness is mounted low and exposed. Salt corrosion or rodent damage gives intermittent faults that come and go with road bumps.

ABS pump / hydraulic control unit failure

Internal pump-motor brushes wear out (very common on Ford Galaxy Mk3, Audi A4 B7, VW Touareg 7L). We test pump-motor current draw and HCU response, then quote a refurb or replacement with full bleed and coding.

Low brake-fluid level or air in the system

Air pockets after a brake job will trigger an ABS fault. We bleed using the scan-tool-controlled pump-bleed routine — the only way to purge air from the HCU on modern cars.

Steering-angle sensor or yaw-rate sensor out of calibration

After a wheel alignment, suspension repair or sub-frame removal the steering-angle sensor needs re-zeroing. The ABS module rejects bad data and disables ESP. We re-calibrate via OBD in under 5 minutes.

How much does ABS fault diagnosis cost?+

Can I keep driving with the ABS light on?+

Your normal brakes still work, but ABS, ESP, traction control and (on many modern cars) hill-start assist and the electronic parking brake will be disabled. In wet, icy or hard-braking conditions the car will not behave the way you expect. We recommend a same-day diagnostic — most jobs are fixed in one visit.

Why does my ABS light come on intermittently?+

Intermittent ABS faults are almost always one of three things: a corroded wheel-speed sensor pigtail, a cracked reluctor ring giving a missing pulse on bumps, or a loose connector at the wheel hub. All three are diagnosed by the live-data trace during a short road test.

Do I need to go to a main dealer for ABS module coding?+

No. Our scan tools cover dealer-level coding and adaptation for every UK platform — BMW ISTA-equivalent, VAG ODIS-equivalent, Mercedes XENTRY-equivalent, JLR SDD, Ford IDS, Toyota Techstream. We can program a replacement ABS module and re-write all adaptation values without a dealer visit.

Can you fix an ABS pump on site or does it need a workshop?+

We bleed, refurb and replace ABS pump motors on the driveway. The job takes 60–120 minutes including the scan-tool pump-bleed routine that's required after any HCU work — there's no need to take the car off the road.

What is steering-angle sensor calibration and do I need it?+

The SAS tells the ABS module where straight-ahead is. After any wheel alignment, sub-frame removal, suspension repair or sometimes a battery disconnect, the SAS needs re-zeroing via OBD or the ESP light stays on. We do this in 5 minutes for £49 as a standalone job.

Do you give a warranty on ABS work?+
