Professional. Mobile. Trusted.
Modern petrol engines use a drive-by-wire (electronic) throttle body — there's no cable from the pedal to the engine. Instead, the throttle motor and its two position sensors are calibrated against the pedal sensor in an adaptation table held in the ECU. Anything that resets that table — a battery disconnect, an ECU reflash, a throttle body clean, a throttle body swap, sometimes a stop-start event with a weak battery — leaves the engine with a high or lumpy idle, intermittent stalling on lift-off, hesitation when pulling away and (on VAG, Ford and Vauxhall) a fast-flashing EML and limp mode. The fix is not a battery disconnect or an OBD code clear — it's a specific adaptation routine that has to be commanded by the scan tool with the engine at a defined coolant temperature. We do it on the driveway, take 20 minutes, and we do it right.

Warning Lights & Symptoms We See Most.
These are the symptoms our customers describe when they book throttle body adaptation. If yours matches one of these, we can usually clear the fault and code/calibrate the affected module on site — no garage drop-off, no waiting list.
Common Causes & What We Check.
Most throttle body adaptation jobs trace back to one of a handful of root causes. We work through them in order, using a dealer-grade OEM-spec scan tool, a multimeter and a road-test — not a code-reader and a guess.
Any interruption to the ECU power supply wipes the throttle adaptation table. The engine will run but idle quality is poor until the routine is re-learned. We see this constantly after a battery swap, jump-start or stop-start failure.
Cleaning the throttle plate of carbon changes its closed-position resting angle. The ECU expected the dirty position; the new clean position is outside the learned window and triggers an adaptation fault. A scan-tool relearn writes the new values in under a minute.
A new throttle body has different sensor offsets to the old one. The ECU has to be told to forget the old values and learn the new ones — a process called Basic Settings on VAG or Idle Air Volume Learning on Nissan.
Any time the ECU is reflashed (Stage 1, MAP swap, EGR/DPF deletion) the adaptation tables are reset. We adapt every car we remap as standard, but customers who bought a remap elsewhere often arrive with a hunting idle.
On some platforms (Ford Focus Mk2/3, Vauxhall Astra J, Renault Trafic) the pedal sensor needs its own adaptation in addition to the throttle. We do both as part of the standard job.
If the battery voltage drops below the stop-start re-start threshold, the ECU can wipe adaptation values mid-cycle. We test battery health as part of the diagnostic and recommend a replacement if it's failing.
Our On-Site Diagnostic Process.
Every throttle body adaptation job follows the same six-step process. No skipping steps to save time, no upselling a part you don't need.
- 1Pre-adaptation scan
Read all stored DTCs and live throttle data (TPS1, TPS2, requested vs actual throttle %, idle speed control). We confirm the throttle body itself is healthy before adapting.
- 2Coolant & battery temperature check
Most adaptation routines refuse to run unless coolant is between 80–95°C and battery voltage is above 12.0V. We check both before commanding the routine.
- 3Run the adaptation routine
Specific routine per platform — VAG Basic Settings 060, Ford KAM reset, Vauxhall idle relearn, BMW INPA throttle reset, Mercedes XENTRY ETC adaptation, Toyota Throttle Body Reset.
- 4Pedal sensor adaptation (where required)
Performed in sequence with the throttle on Ford, Renault, Vauxhall and Nissan. The ECU records the full pedal travel range from rest to wide-open.
- 5Idle stabilisation run
Engine left at idle for 5–7 minutes with all loads off, then with AC and heated rear screen on, to let the ECU populate the learned idle table across electrical loads.
- 6Road-test & verification
Short road test to confirm idle is stable, EML stays off, no fault codes return and cruise control will engage.

Throttle Body Adaptation — Questions
What is throttle body adaptation and why do I need it?+
Modern petrol engines use an electronic (drive-by-wire) throttle. The ECU stores a calibration table for the throttle motor and pedal sensor. Any event that wipes that table — battery disconnect, throttle clean, ECU flash — leaves the engine with a lumpy idle until the table is re-learned with a scan tool. The OBD code clear function will not do this.
How much does throttle body adaptation cost?+
£69 fixed for the standalone adaptation routine. £89 if pedal sensor adaptation is also needed (Ford, Renault, Vauxhall, Nissan). £149 for a full throttle body clean + adapt. All prices include the on-site visit, scan, adaptation and road-test.
Why does my car idle high after I disconnected the battery?+
The ECU lost its learned throttle position. The throttle motor parks at a slightly different angle than the ECU expected, so it commands more air to compensate, which raises the idle to 1200–1500 rpm. A 60-second adaptation routine writes the new values and the idle drops back to normal.
Can I do throttle body adaptation myself with a code reader?+
Generic OBD readers cannot command the adaptation routine. The routine is OEM-specific — VAG Basic Settings 060, Ford KAM reset, Vauxhall idle relearn, BMW DME throttle reset — and requires a dealer-grade tool to send the correct service command. Driving the car a long way or doing a 'key-on / key-off / pedal cycle' rarely works on modern engines.
Will throttle body adaptation fix my limp-mode fault?+
If the limp mode is caused by a P2122, P2127, P0122, P0222, P0638 or P2138 — yes, almost always. If the throttle motor itself is failing (worn brushes, dead Hall sensor) the adaptation will fail and we'll quote a replacement honestly before any work.
How long does the job take?+
Most cars 20–40 minutes from arrival. The adaptation routine itself runs in 60–120 seconds, but the engine has to be at full operating temperature first, then the idle is left to stabilise across electrical loads (AC, lights, heated screens) before we hand back.
Does this also fix my stop-start system?+
Frequently yes. If stop-start has stopped working since a battery swap or throttle clean, it's usually because the ECU's idle-stop entry conditions can't be met until the throttle re-learns. We re-enable stop-start as part of the same job at no extra charge.
Do you cover diesel engines too?+
Yes — most modern diesels use an electronic throttle/EGR-flap module that also needs adaptation. Same fixed price, same on-site service.
Why Drivers Choose StageMyCar For Throttle Body Adaptation
Most throttle body adaptation faults aren't a "swap the part and hope" job — they're a coding, calibration and adaptation problem. A high-street garage with a generic OBD reader can pull a fault code but often can't write the calibration data back to the module after a repair, which is why so many customers tell us the warning light came back the next morning. Our vans carry dealer-grade tooling for every UK-market platform, so the calibration that clears the light isn't a separate dealer trip — it's part of the same fixed-price visit.
We attend driveways, workplaces, supermarket car parks, airport long-stays and roadside breakdowns across London, the M25 corridor and the M3/M4/M40 commuter belt. Fixed price quoted on WhatsApp before we attend; cards, cash, bank transfer and Payment Assist (3–4 monthly instalments on jobs over £250) all accepted; 12-month warranty on every job.
