Modern fuel injectors are precision-machined to flow within a tight tolerance band. The exact deviation of each injector from the nominal flow rate is etched on the body as a code — Bosch IMA (Injektor Mengen Abgleich), Delphi C2I/C3I, Denso QR code, Continental short-trim code — and that code has to be written into the ECU's injector table so the engine knows how much fuel each cylinder will actually deliver from a given pulse-width. Skip the coding step and the engine runs rough, the EML comes on, fuel economy drops 15–30%, the DPF clogs faster and the customer's £400 set of new injectors looks like a waste of money. Coding takes 15 minutes per engine with a dealer-grade scan tool. We do it on the driveway.

Common Causes & What We Check.

Most injector coding & ima calibration jobs trace back to one of a handful of root causes. We work through them in order, using a dealer-grade OEM-spec scan tool, a multimeter and a road-test — not a code-reader and a guess.

Old injector codes still in the ECU (most common)

When new injectors are fitted, the ECU still uses the previous injectors' calibration values until the new IMA codes are written. The actual fuel delivery doesn't match the assumed fuel delivery and the engine runs rough. A 15-minute coding routine fixes it.

ECU reflash wiped the injector table

Some remappers reset the injector calibration table back to nominal values. If the injectors are not nominal (and almost none are) the engine runs rough until the etched codes are re-written. Standard part of every reputable remap job — we do it free for any car we remap.

Wrong IMA code typed in

A single transposed digit in a 7- or 9-character IMA code can give worse running than not coding at all. We re-read the actual etched codes from the injector body and re-enter from scratch.

Cylinder contribution out of balance after refurb

Refurbished injectors can drift outside their original tolerance even with the original code. We run the cylinder contribution test live and re-balance via Smooth Running Adjustment if any cylinder is contributing too much or too little.

Failed injector among the new set

Roughly 1 in 50 brand-new aftermarket injectors arrives DOA. Coding will not save a dead injector — we test each cylinder's contribution and identify a faulty unit before condemning the rest.

Glow plug or compression fault confused for injector trim

On cold-start the symptoms can look identical. We test compression and glow-plug resistance as part of the diagnostic so we don't waste a coding session on the wrong root cause.

Injector Coding & IMA Calibration — Questions

What is injector coding and why do I need it?+

Every modern diesel and most GDI petrol injectors are etched with a calibration code (IMA, C2I, QR or short-trim) that tells the ECU exactly how much fuel that specific injector will deliver. Without writing the new codes after replacement, the ECU uses the old values, fuel delivery is wrong, the engine runs rough, fuel economy drops and the EML comes on. Coding takes 15 minutes per engine.

How much does injector coding cost?+

£79 for a single injector. £129 for a full set (4, 6 or 8 cylinders) including Smooth Running Adjustment. Both include the on-site visit, dealer-grade scan, coding, verification and 12-month warranty on the coding work.

Can I drive without coding new injectors?+

Mechanically yes, but the engine will run rough, fuel economy will drop 15–30%, the DPF will clog faster, the EML will come on and (on most modern platforms) the ECU will eventually go into limp mode. We strongly recommend coding at the same visit as the injector job.

Will a generic code reader code my injectors?+

No. Injector coding is a service-level routine, not a code clear. It needs a dealer-grade scan tool with bidirectional access to the ECU's injector calibration table — VAG ODIS, BMW ISTA, Mercedes XENTRY, JLR SDD, Ford IDS, etc. Generic OBD readers cannot perform it.

What is Smooth Running Adjustment?+

After the static IMA codes are written, most modern diesels run an additional dynamic trim routine called Smooth Running Adjustment (Mengenabgleich on VAG, Injection Quantity Balance on BMW). It fine-tunes fuel delivery per cylinder at idle until contribution is within ±2 mg/stroke. Standard part of our injector coding job.

Does this work on petrol injectors too?+

Yes — direct-injection petrols (TSI/TFSI, MultiAir, EcoBoost, T-GDI, D-4S) use short-trim codes that work the same way as diesel IMA. Port-injected (older multi-point petrol) engines don't need coding.

Can you do this after a remap?+

Yes — and we strongly recommend it. Many remappers reset the injector table to nominal values, which causes rough running on engines with non-nominal injectors. We re-read the etched codes from the injector bodies and re-write them in 45–60 minutes for £99.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?+

Keep the car off the driveway gravel if possible (we need flat ground for the engine-running portion). Have your V5 logbook ready. If you have the original injector paperwork or photos of the codes, bring them — but we re-read from the bodies anyway.
