Main dealers use brand-specific diagnostic software — ISTA for BMW, ODIS for VAG, GDS for Hyundai — and charge accordingly. But modern aftermarket equipment covers 95%+ of the same functions including coding, programming and adaptations.
What dealer-level mobile diagnostics can do
Read and clear codes across every module, run live data, perform component activations (injector tests, ABS bleeds, throttle adaptations), code new keys, register new batteries, reset service indicators, perform regen on DPFs — all from a van at your driveway.
What only the dealer can do
Online security-gated procedures on the very newest cars (some 2022+ VAG, Mercedes, BMW immobiliser work) require an OEM online connection. We always tell you up front if your job needs the dealer.
Cost difference
A £60–£90 mobile diagnostic typically replaces a £180–£250 dealer visit, with no need to drive a fault-affected car. For most modern faults this is the smart first move.
