The good news: in 8 out of 10 cases the fault is not the airbag itself but a much cheaper component — a broken pin in the seat-occupancy connector under the front seat, a worn clock-spring inside the steering wheel, a corroded crash-sensor pigtail or a flat backup capacitor in the SRS control module. Common Causes & What We Check.
Most airbag / srs warning light reset jobs trace back to one of a handful of root causes. We work through them in order, using a dealer-grade OEM-spec scan tool, a multimeter and a road-test — not a code-reader and a guess.
Seat-occupancy sensor / mat fault (most common)
The mat under the front passenger seat sends a weight signal to the SRS module so it knows whether to disable the front airbag for an empty seat or a child seat. The mat itself rarely fails — but the under-seat connector breaks pins every time the seat is slid back and forth. Common on Mercedes W204/W212, BMW E90/F10/F30, VW Golf MK6/MK7, Audi A3 8P/8V.
Clock-spring (squib) failure
The spiral ribbon cable inside the steering wheel that carries the airbag, horn and cruise-control signals to the rotating wheel wears out and breaks a track. Symptom: airbag light + horn or cruise dead. Replacement on site in 45–60 minutes.
Corroded crash-sensor pigtail
Side-impact crash sensors are mounted inside the B-pillars and door cards. Water ingress from a leaky door seal corrodes the pigtail and logs a hard fault. We test the resistance at the connector and repair without replacing the sensor.
SRS module crash-data stored
After a low-speed bump or even a hard parking knock the SRS module can latch a one-time crash flag. Until the flag is cleared the light will never go off, even after a perfect physical repair. We clear the flag via OBD with dealer-grade tooling.
Pre-tensioner squib resistance out of range
Seat-belt pre-tensioners contain a small pyrotechnic squib. The SRS module checks the resistance every key-on and logs a fault if it drifts. We measure resistance at the squib connector and quote a replacement only if it's out of spec.
SRS backup capacitor / battery flat
After a flat battery or a long storage period the SRS backup capacitor discharges and logs a transient fault. A scan-tool reset clears the code and the light goes out — no parts needed.

Will my car fail its MOT with the airbag light on?+
Yes. An SRS / airbag warning light that stays on with the engine running is an automatic MOT fail under section 7.1.5 of the MOT manual. We run a same-day pre-MOT clear for £59 so customers can pass first time.
Why won't an OBD reader clear my airbag light?+
Most consumer OBD readers can only clear stored engine codes. The SRS module stores a separate set of crash-history codes that need dealer-grade tooling to write back to zero — even after the physical fault is fixed. That's why the light comes back the moment you drive off.
Is it safe to drive with the airbag warning light on?+
Mechanically the car drives normally, but the airbags and seat-belt pre-tensioners are disabled. In a collision they will not deploy. We recommend a same-day diagnostic — most jobs are fixed and cleared in one visit.
What is the most common cause of the airbag light?+
By a wide margin, broken pins on the seat-occupancy mat connector under the front passenger seat. Every time the seat is slid back and forth the connector flexes and a pin eventually snaps. We see this 3–4 times a week on Mercedes W204/W205, BMW F30 and Audi A3 8V.
Will my insurance be affected if I clear the airbag light myself?+
An incorrect or undocumented SRS reset can void your insurance — particularly after a bump that left a latched crash-data flag. We provide a written diagnostic report with every job confirming what was found, what was repaired and what was cleared, which insurers accept.
Can you reset the airbag light after I bought a salvage / cat-N car?+
Yes, provided the physical SRS components (airbags, pre-tensioners, crash sensors, module) test within spec. If any squib resistance is out of range we will not clear the fault — we'll quote the replacement honestly first.
What about the passenger airbag OFF light being stuck on?+
That's a separate fault — usually the seat-occupancy mat itself rather than the SRS module. We test the mat resistance with the dealer tool and replace it on site if needed (most popular Mercedes and BMW mats carried on the van).
